Toddler Halloween Costumes
Toddlers will want their toddler Halloween costume too, so
they can be part of the Halloween action along with the rest of
the family, even though they may not yet be ready to go treat
or tricking or to stay up late for the Halloween costume
party.
Halloween is a time for older children to dress up in fun
spooky costumes, and go trick or treating. Being cute is no
longer on their minds - they want to curdle your blood and send
a chill up and down your spine.
Your toddler, on the other hand, is likely to still find the
images of ghosts and witches very scary. They need to be taken
care of during Halloween, to make sure they do not become
frightened of the dark or have bad dreams because of the
escapades during Halloween of the older children.
Most toddlers have a favourite television cartoon, movie or
story book character. Small children get a lot more pleasure
from dressing up as a familiar character they know and love.
They are still young enough to like to be praised for looking
cute, and are more likely to get a lot of fun out of acting out
the role of their favourite character than out of trying to be
an evil witch or goblin.
Favourite characters are changing all the time, depending on
what programs and movies are showing. While you may be thinking
about the old standbys of Superman, Batman, Mickey Mouse,
Scooby Doo, Spiderman and the like, your toddler may have a
totally different perception about what characters are "hot"
right now.
You need to be guided by which television, cartoon, movie or
story book characters make your toddler's eyes light up with
excitement. Discover the right character, and you are assured
of success, even if the costume is mediocre.
Costumes are readily available to buy or rent for most of
the leading cartoon and movie characters. The quality varies,
from low cost plastic outfits through to expensive
professionally detailed costumes. Especially with toddlers you
need to be mindful of safety considerations, such as avoiding
inflammable clothing, when making your costume choices. With
lots of candles, and all the other things you have to do at
Halloween, you do not want to take unnecessary risks that your
toddler could get into trouble when you are not looking.
A problem with renting is that the costume must be returned.
If your toddler falls in love with a well chosen costume you
may find this could become a difficulty for you.
Homemade toddler Halloween costumes are a lower cost option.
Many of the favourite cartoon characters are animals, and make
popular Halloween costume choices for toddlers. One-piece
suits, especially those that come with a hood, make an ideal
starting point for a toddler animal suit. Add a tail and ears,
get busy with some fabric paint or a marker pen, apply some
face paint, and soon you will have a cat, rabbit, lion, or
whatever you want.
If you can find a large soft toy for a low price at a garage
sale, you may be able to remove the tail, ears, whiskers, paws
and other parts, and sew them onto your toddler's suit to
create a near instant and very successful costume. Chances are,
the costume will remain your toddler's favourite outfit long
after Halloween.
